In China, the ADAS equipment ratio on commercial vehicles (including buses and trucks) was 17.3% in 2021 and is expected to reach 59% in 2030. Specifically, forward collision warning (FCW) and lane departure warning (LDW) remained the commonly adopted sub-systems while automatic emergency brake (AEB) started to penetrate the market.

This post is dedicated to the commercial vehicles ADAS market of China in the following aspects:

  • Regulations
  • 2021 equipment data
  • Suppliers landscape
  • Trends identification

It includes breakdowns by ADAS sub-systems:

  • FCW & LDW
  • AEB

It also includes breakdowns by commercial vehicle categories:

  • Buses
  • Trucks

Regulations

  • Buses over 9m in length shall be equipped with FCW and LDW (from April 2018) and AEB (from April 2019).
  • Trucks with gross vehicle weight ≥ 12,000kg and all tractors shall be equipped with FCW and LDW (from September 2020).
  • Trucks with gross vehicle weight ≥ 12,000kg and maximum speed above 90km/h, tractors with maximum speed of/over 90km/h, and trucks carrying dangerous goods with gross vehicle weight ≥ 12,000kg shall be equipped with AEB (from May 2021).

2021 equipment data

In 2021, there were about 32,700 buses over 9m in length pre-equipped with LDW and AEB out of 362,800 buses sold. The leading OEMs are Yutong, CRRC, and Zhongtong Bus respectively.

In 2021, there were about 659,500 trucks pre-equipped with LDW and FCW, 47.39% of total number of trucks sold. From May 2021 (when the regulations became effective) to year-end, there were about 42,900 trucks with pre-equipped AEB.

(Data is based on vehicles with insurance excluding imports and exports.)

Suppliers Landscape

On buses, the top suppliers of LDW were Molead, JIMU Intelligent and Tsintel Technology with market shares of 30.17%, 20.7% and 14.11% respectively.

The top suppliers of AEB were Molead, Zhejiang Rongzhong Technology and Tsintel Technology with market shares of 30.17%, 12.97%, and 12.41% respectively.

Molead is a subsidiary of Yutong supplying auto parts and Zhejiang Rongzhong Technology’s sensing solution was provided by JIMU Intelligent.

On trucks, the top suppliers of LDW and FCW were Neusoft Reach, Hirain, Tsintel, Freetech and Minieye with combined market share close to 90%.

There were six suppliers for AEB while Freetech and ZF ranked the top with market shares of 36.4% and 26.47 % respectively. Among the six, ZF, Knorr-Bremse and Hirain all adopted Mobileye’s sensing solution.

Trends identification

  • The regulatory supports are stepping up from basic warnings (LDW and FCW) to active safety (AEB). Lane keeping assist (LKA) will be promoted in 2022.
  • Vehicle-grade sensors, domain controllers, and by-wire systems will be gradually adopted by commercial vehicles for further and more sophisticated ADAS functions.
  • Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (PACC), an upgrade from Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with the support of ADAS map, is a popular demand on commercial vehicles in order to improve vehicle fuel economy.
  • Integrated ADAS and DMS solution makes sense technologically while lowers the total cost as opposed to deploying two separate solutions.
